The Orquestra Filarmónica Portuguesa celebrates its 10th anniversary with the reprise of a landmark concert in its history – Symphony No. 2 “Resurrection” by Gustav Mahler.
Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, “Resurrection”, is a work deeply marked by the composer’s spiritual and existential vision. Conceived while he was still composing his First Symphony, this masterpiece traces an inner journey that moves from anguish and suffering toward a liberating spirituality, in an intense search for meaning.
Throughout the symphony, Mahler leads us along a path that evokes human fragility, an awareness of mortality, and the anticipation of the Last Judgment, culminating in a powerful hymn to hope and renewal. In the final movement, with the intervention of the chorus and solo voices, the idea of resurrection emerges as a triumph over doubt and death, proclaiming the possibility of a full and transfigured life.
The symphony concludes with an extraordinary crescendo, transforming the initial unrest into a jubilant affirmation of faith and hope, making “Resurrection” not merely a symphony, but a true existential and spiritual journey.
