As part of the commemorations of the 500th anniversary of the birth of the poet Luís de Camões and the 250th anniversary of the birth of the composer João Domingos Bomtempo, the Portuguese Philharmonic Orchestra presents a tribute of profound cultural and historical significance with Domingos Bomtempo’s Requiem “In Memory of Camões.”
Composed in 1799, Domingos Bomtempo’s Requiem “In Memory of Camões” is one of the most remarkable works of Portuguese sacred music. Written in homage to Luís Vaz de Camões, the piece reflects the classical sensibility and humanistic ideals of its time.
Inspired by the Viennese models of Mozart and Haydn, Bomtempo creates an expressive and balanced musical language, where the solemnity of the funeral rite is intertwined with intense and universal emotion. This Requiem is not only a tribute to the poet but also a celebration of memory, art, and Portuguese national identity.
